TikTok GMV Max Now Counts Some Seller Costs. Here Is What It Still Can't See.
A TikTok Shop campaign can look efficient on revenue and still lose money once creator commissions, coupons, and returns are counted. TikTok has started to close part of that gap. The part it leaves open is the part that decides your margin.
Since mid-2025, GMV Max has been the only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads, per TikTok's migration notice. Through 2026, TikTok has been moving it from growing GMV toward a return that accounts for seller costs, most recently with GMV Max Pro, which TikTok's help center describes as rolling out to some advertisers. This post covers what GMV Max now counts, what it still cannot see, and how to judge TikTok Shop on margin whichever version is running in your account. For the setup mechanics, see our guide to setting up TikTok Shop GMV Max.
Quick answer: what GMV Max counts, and what is still yours to measure
- What changed: TikTok has added affiliate costs, coupons, and platform commissions to how GMV Max optimizes, starting with GMV Max Pro for some advertisers.
- What it still cannot see: product cost, fulfillment, returns, creator samples, and what TikTok spend does for your sales on other channels.
- The opportunity: an algorithm that counts more of your costs buys fewer orders that only look profitable.
- The risk: a TikTok-reported return that includes some costs is easy to mistake for profit. It is still a channel score.
- Do now: judge TikTok Shop on contribution margin by product, measured outside TikTok and next to your other channels.
GMV Max has been moving from growing GMV toward counting seller costs
The rollout has been gradual, but the direction has held for a year: each step brings more of the cost side into TikTok's view.
How GMV Max has changed, and what each change means for your margin
| When | What changed | What it means for your margin |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-2025 | GMV Max becomes the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads | Targeting, placement, and bidding are automated. Your influence sits in products, targets, budget, and creative. |
| February 2026 | ROI protection extended to campaigns built in Seller Center and Ads Manager | Credits when ROI falls short of target, but frequent manual changes forfeit them. Changing less is rewarded. |
| May 2026 | TikTok announced that GMV Max would factor in affiliate commissions, coupons, and fees, and added Spillover reporting for sales in other channels | TikTok itself treats revenue alone as the wrong target, and accepts that some of its value lands elsewhere. |
| October 2026 | GMV Max Pro rolling out to some advertisers. Growth Autopilot splits one budget between ads and coupons for new products. | Cost-aware optimization exists, but not in every account. Promotions and media spend are now one decision. |
If you are not sure which version runs in your account, check the campaign settings in Ads Manager or Seller Center rather than assuming. TikTok has staged the rollout by advertiser and market.
What GMV Max counts now, and what it still cannot see
The costs TikTok has added are the ones it already sees on its own platform. The costs that usually decide whether a product is worth advertising sit outside it.
Which costs GMV Max Pro counts. Shaded rows are the costs you still bring in yourself.
| Cost | Counted by GMV Max Pro? | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Affiliate commissions | Yes, where GMV Max Pro is available | TikTok Shop |
| Coupons | Yes, where GMV Max Pro is available | TikTok Shop |
| Platform commissions and referral fees | Yes, where GMV Max Pro is available | TikTok Shop. Rates vary by category and change, so check Seller Center. |
| Product cost | No | Your books |
| Fulfillment and shipping | No | Your 3PL or fulfillment statements |
| Returns and refunds | No | Settled weeks after the sale |
| Creator samples | No | Your inventory and outreach records |
| Sales lifted on Amazon, Walmart, or your own site | No, beyond TikTok's own Spillover estimate | Your other channels |
Even in an account with GMV Max Pro, the cost side of your margin is split between TikTok's view and yours. A target that looks healthy inside TikTok can still sit below what a product needs to earn.
TikTok's reported return is a channel score, not your profit
Attribution counts orders the ads may not have driven
TikTok's attribution documentation says that while a GMV Max campaign runs, all paid and organic orders for its products are attributed to the campaign, whether or not the buyer engaged with an ad. Organic and affiliate sales show up as campaign results. That is a reasonable design for an automated system and a poor basis for judging spend. Compare GMV Max results with your total shop sales for the same products and period, and treat a wide gap as a question to answer. Our explainer on TikTok Shop ROI versus RoAS covers why the two numbers diverge.
Some of the value lands on other channels
Agencies told Digiday that TikTok Shop results can look weak on their own while creator content run through GMV Max lifts sales on Amazon, Walmart, and in stores. TikTok's Spillover reporting points the same way. If you sell in more than one place, a TikTok number read alone undercounts some campaigns and overcounts others. Our posts on advertising Amazon products on TikTok and Walmart Connect on TikTok cover where the channels overlap.
The levers you still control under GMV Max
With audience, placement, and bidding automated, these inputs still move results. Our GMV Max setup guide covers the settings in detail.
- Product selection. Keep a product out of a campaign when its margin cannot support the target, rather than raising the whole campaign's target to cover it.
- Creative supply. GMV Max can only sell with the videos it has. Affiliate posts, authorized creator content, and Spark Ads posts set the ceiling. Our guide to TikTok Shop affiliate marketing strategy covers how to build that supply.
- Commission rates and samples. Where GMV Max Pro is live, commissions feed the optimization, so stale rates mean the system optimizes against old costs.
- ROI target discipline. Change targets rarely and one at a time. Frequent edits forfeit ROI protection for the day.
- Coupons and promotions. They now draw on the same decision as ad spend, so plan them together.
- Measurement outside TikTok. Contribution margin by product, after the shaded costs above, read next to your other channels.
Black Friday on TikTok Shop: two margin questions to settle before Nov 11
TikTok Shop's 2026 Black Friday and Cyber Monday campaign runs Nov 11 to 30 (PT). Two details change how you should read the results.
- November margin stays provisional until February. Eligible items sold from Nov 11 through Dec 31 can be returned until Feb 10, 2027, per the same guide. Plan to recompute holiday margin after that date, not the Monday after Cyber Monday.
- Campaign-created ads may keep spending. TikTok's campaign registration guidance says GMV Max is required to join platform campaigns, can create campaigns for registered products, and that those system-created ads do not stop on their own when the promotion ends. Put a review on the calendar for Dec 1.
Where Qore fits: one margin number across TikTok and the rest of your channels
Everything above has one thing in common: it needs numbers from TikTok and numbers TikTok does not have, joined at the product level, every week. That is the work our product Qore, from Trellis, is built for. Qore turns a review your team runs by hand into a skill that runs on a schedule, with every step visible and changes held for approval until you decide to automate them.
See contribution margin by product and channel in one view
Qore pulls TikTok ad spend into the same blended view as your Amazon, Walmart, and Shopify numbers. Add the costs TikTok does not see, from the files and systems you already keep, and the weekly answer becomes contribution margin by SKU and channel instead of four reports reconciled by hand. Shameless Pets built this kind of margin chain for its Amazon business. As its Ecommerce Director, Jackson Hathaway, said in the case study: "It has become my channel P&L."
Watch what TikTok spend does for your other channels
A Qore skill can line up weekly TikTok spend against branded search and sales on Amazon, remember last week's result, and flag when the two move apart. That is monitoring, not proof of incrementality, and it shows more than either platform's dashboard does alone.
Recompute targets when costs move, with a person approving
Fee schedules, commission rates, and promotion costs change without your listing changing. A scheduled Qore skill can rerun margin by product, propose new targets, and wait for someone on your team to approve them. Alerts go to Slack or email, and the same numbers can roll into a refreshed deck for leadership or clients.
You do not start from a blank page. Qore comes with 50+ prebuilt skills, and Q, Qore's assistant, helps you build your own in plain language. Qore leaves GMV Max's decisions to TikTok and gives you the margin number to judge them by.
If your campaigns are already scaled on revenue RoAS, audit before you change anything
- Pull the last 30 days of orders for your biggest campaigns and add up the commissions, coupons, and refunds you paid, not the rates you assumed.
- Compare GMV Max's reported sales with your total shop sales for the same products and period.
- Check whether GMV Max Pro or Growth Autopilot is active in your account, and note the date it switched on.
- Where a product's margin cannot support the campaign's target, take it out of the campaign before touching the target.
- Record current targets, spend, and orders as a baseline, so you can tell later whether results moved because of TikTok's changes or your own.
Agents are coming to ad platforms, and approval rules matter more than the connector
TikTok has made its TikTok for Business MCP available as a connector in Claude and other AI platforms, per its Advertising Week announcement. Ad platforms are opening to agents that can plan and change campaigns. Who approves budget and status changes, and what each connection may touch, are decisions the advertiser makes. Giving an agent edit rights on a spend-bearing account without those rules repeats the revenue-target mistake at machine speed.
Conclusion: let TikTok optimize, and keep the margin number yourself
TikTok is right to count commissions, coupons, and fees, and each step in that direction makes GMV Max a better buyer. It will still see only part of your costs and only one of your channels. Judge TikTok Shop on contribution margin by product, read next to the rest of the business, and treat TikTok's reported return as one input to that number. If you want that view running every week without rebuilding it, start with Qore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not fully. Where GMV Max Pro is available, TikTok factors affiliate costs, coupons, and platform commissions into optimization. Product cost, fulfillment, returns, and creator samples are still outside its view, so profit is still yours to measure.
TikTok describes GMV Max Pro as rolling out to some advertisers in supported markets. Check your campaign settings in Ads Manager or Seller Center rather than assuming it is on.
Revenue RoAS counts the sales a creator drives but not the commission paid on them, so RoAS looks better than the campaign's real return. The higher your share of affiliate orders and the higher the commission rate, the wider the gap.
While a GMV Max campaign runs, TikTok attributes all paid and organic orders for the campaign's products to the campaign, whether or not the buyer engaged with an ad. Compare its results with your total shop sales for the same products and period.
For eligible items sold from Nov 11 to Dec 31, 2026, shoppers can return until Feb 10, 2027, per TikTok Shop's campaign guide. Some categories follow their standard return rules.
It is TikTok's connector built on the open Model Context Protocol, which lets AI platforms such as Claude plan, launch, and manage TikTok ad workflows. Approval rules for budget and status changes are still the advertiser's to set.
